We talk often about the oversights of corporate-driven media, how it underrepresents communities of color or misrepresents them entirely. But after a long 15-year battle at the Federal Communications Commission, non-profit organizations and community groups may be on the verge of putting a dent in that corporate agenda.
Two years ago, President Obama signed the Local Community Radio Act into law. The legislation effectively opened the airwaves to hundreds of new low power FM radio stations. But in order to be among those hundreds of new radio station hosts, you need a license. Applications can only be submitted October 15-29, but prospective applicants can begin preparing for the process by looking at the website on the FCC’s website, which you can access here.
The possibilities that this new opportunity represents isn’t lost on the activists who helped make it happen. Jeff Rousset, an organizer with Philadelphia-based Prometheus Radio Project, explained the significance on Democracy Now.
“This is a historic opportunity for communities all over the country to have a voice over their airwaves,” Rousset said. “The airwaves are supposed to belong to the public. And now this is a chance for groups to actually own and control their own media outlets all over the country.”
Perhaps most importantly, this opening up of the airwaves provides an opportunity for local grassroots groups to take power of the news that’s heard in their communities.
Ramón Ramírez, president of Oregon’s largest Latino organization, Pineros Y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste, told Democracy Now that his group started their own station with the help of the Prometheus Radio Project and the results have been a crucial part of their organizing work.
“We’ve been able to use it as an organizing tool, not only to organize farmworkers—we are the farmworker union of Oregon—but also to provide information and give people that never had a voice,” Ramirez said. “For example, we’re broadcasting in four indigenous languages from Mexico and Central America, and we’re giving those folks a voice in the community that they never had.”
ColorofChange.org has also been waging a campaign to spread the word about Low Power FM radio stations, and you can get some good background by reading up on their efforts.
If you’d like to start your own station, Prometheus is holding a free online training this week. You can visit their website and register for free.
I’m not super thin, but I’m thin for, like, Detroit.
Note: In a Racist (White Supremacist) society, suspected Racists often use code words to practice Racism, particularly during the refined stage of Racism (White Supremacy) when deceit, rather than violence, is the principal weapon used to dominate all those classified as non-white. In this instance, “Detroit”, an area consisting of a large number of black Victims of Racism, codes for black people in general. Ms. Dunham is simply reinforcing the Racist (White Supremacist) falsehood that black people (black females specifically) are not just more overweight than anyone else but overwhelmingly so. CREE, on her blog, debunked this vicious myth and cited the research that proved that women who classify themselves as “white”, in this area of the world, have no need to look outside their own racial classification for understanding the so-called obesity epidemic. Dunham simply is doing what suspected Racists continuously do, which is remind everyone that there is one group that is especially deserving of mistreatment and that’s black people. The implication of her seemingly innocuous comment is that being overweight is worthy of Stern’s critique in the first place and that quite possibly his disapproving gaze should be directed at a group of people that the Racists (White Supremacists) say are even more overweight. Both Stern’s behavior and Dunhams subsequent response are repulsive.
Code Suggestion: Rather than petitioning Racists (White Supremacists) to include non-white people in their media, withdraw all support of these works and promote the works of individuals who contribute constructive VALUE to society and who best represent Truth and Justice not Racist (White Supremacist) and misogynist ideas and messages.

”When we hear of a rampage shooting by a white guy, we immediately claim it is a result of individual pathology - mental illness. The problem is “him,” not “us.”
When we hear of a rampage or gang murders in the inner city, we assume it is the result of a “social pathology” — something about the culture of poverty, the legacy of racism or some intrinsic characteristics of “them” or “those people.”
This difference in treatment allows us to avoid talking about what whiteness might have to do with the violence while always talking about what blackness or brownness has to do with it. “
Until proven otherwise in a trial through evidence that is convincing to me, I take the position that these reports of black people eating other people is staged to further dispose us to attack by non-black people. And, even if proven, I will take the position that the black assailant was a victim of some kind of MK Ultra mind-altering science. TED talks, wiki, the grand world wide web, y’all.
So much talk in the media today, about where are the black fathers? The missing black fathers, the missing black husbands as though generations of black men have just kind of opted out of family life for no apparent reason. What’s missing from this debate, and this public discussion is often the recognition that black men didn’t just walk out on their families voluntarily in most cases. They’re often taken away in handcuffs and locked in cages years and sometimes decades of their lives and frequently for relatively minor non-violent or drug related offenses. And then once they’re released they’re saddled with criminal records that make it nearly impossible to find employment or housing to contribute meaningfully to a family. And this, the destruction of black family in the United States is highly linked to the emergence of mass incarceration. (The odds of a black child being raised by both parents were actually higher during slavery than they are today.) And that is due to in no small part to the mass incarceration of black men and their inability as a result of being branded felons to contribute meaningfully to a family unit. I think that the discussion of where have all the black men gone has just done an incredible disservice to our public understanding around what has really gone on in the communities hardest hit by mass incarceration.
Joseph D. Gardner, a 17-year-old white teen allegedly lit another white teen, 13, on fire on April 19, 2012.
When Suspected Racist teen, Joseph Gardner, was arrested it was presumed by a few bloggers that it was in relation to an earlier case also involving a white, 13-year-old alleged burn victim. In the earlier case, the alleged victim was reportedly burned by two black male teens in late March. However, CodeLens has confirmed with Amy Anderson, the reporter at KCTV who covered the March case, that the Gardner case is unrelated to the March case and there have been no arrests made or suspects identified in the March case. So it is unknown, at this point, whether there were indeed two black males who burned the alleged victim. Apparently, enforcement officials are still investigating.
The March case received national attention because of the racial classifications of both the alleged victim and his alleged attackers. Below is an excerpt from the article:
Part of the police investigation has included attempting to verify the veracity of the boy’s claims.
This prompted the boy’s mother earlier this month to complain that police were treating her son as a suspect.
"It’s very frustrating because I feel like we’re being brushed off and there’s nothing that is happening for us," the mother said Monday.
But in a news conference held last month, detectives said what the boy experienced was a particularly heinous crime.
The case drew national attention last month because the boy is white and he said the two teen boys who set him on fire were African-Americans.
In her seminal work, The Isis Papers: Keys to the Colors, psychiatrist and educator, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing M.D. made the following observation:
An additional psychological defense maneuver utilized by whites has been that of projection. Feeling extreme hostility and hate towards non-whites, whites began the pattern of stating that non-whites hated them. In many instances, this mechanism has served to mitigate the guilt whites occasionally experience for their impulse to aggress against Blacks and other people of color.
This type of projection seems to apply in cases where the alleged perpetrator is classified as black and the alleged victim is white. It is important to study these cases carefully as they are often used to incite Suspected Racists to violent acts against non-white people whether the initial reports are found to be true or not. For an example of the projection that Dr. Welsing talks about, read the comments associated with this report.
With the increased number of violent incidents and murders involving unarmed black Victims of Racism, there seems to be a concerted effort by Racists (White Supremacists) to deflect the attention away from these overt acts of Racism (White Supremacy). These stories involving both Racist acts and the alleged retaliatory attacks by black people against people who classify themselves as white have been heavily promoted lately. It seems like there is no chance for concepts such as Justice, Truth, and Correctness to be promoted by the Racist Suspects. Instead, Racists (White Supremacists) seem most interested potentially encouraging violence against non-white people and to subtly encourage non-white people to respond in undisciplined and violent ways (protesting, rioting, etc).
That’s why it’s important for the reactions of non-white people to be codified. Victims of Racism should have planned strategies on how to counter-act Racist (White Supremacist) machinations in all areas of people activity, including War.
It is also important to understand that deception is a key part of the System of Racism (White Supremacy), which means that everything produced by the media should be viewed with intense suspicion.
