Police punch pregnant woman and bodyslam her face down on the sidewalk
ROCHESTER, NY — An officer for the Rochester Police Department was recorded on video getting punching a pregnant woman in the back of the head and a body-slamming her face first into a sidewalk.
The woman was yelling loudly and not complying with the officer. While an officer struggled with her, she screamed, “Get off of me, you’re gonna kill my baby.”
"I’m pregnant, I’m pregnant," she yelled.
That’s when an unidentified police officer balled his fist and punched the woman in the back of the head.
The officer followed up his punch by holding his weight against the woman and falling with her onto the sidewalk, face first.
The woman screamed and the bystanders cried out in shock.
Because prenatal genetic screening is now considered an essential part of personalized medicine, it is becoming integrated into social welfare systems and private insurance schemes. In March 2009, a California program began offering genetic screening through blood tests to every pregnant woman in the state for $162. Women shown to be at high risk can get follow-up services at state-approved Prenatal Diagnostic Centers. Run by the California Department of Public Health, the Genetic Disease Screening Program, which also includes newborn screening, is the largest screening program in the world. Its mission is “to serve the people of California by reducing the emotional and financial burden of disability an death caused by genetic and congenial disorders” Such government programs will make genetic testing of fetuses and embryos increasingly available across racial and socioeconomic lines.
What are the implications when the government encourages all of its citizens, including low-income women of color, to use genetic screening to select out certain disfavored traits? State genetic screening programs provide low-income women and women of color the reproductive options more privileged women already have. They also seem to reduce health disparities by equalizing the prevention of disabling genes. But the expansion of a coercive genetic testing regime could also reduce public support for general health care for everyone. Unlike IVF whose primary purpose is to increase fertility, PGD functions to help women avoid starting a pregnancy that entails unwanted genes. The aim of IVF is to produce the birth of a live baby; the aim of PGD and fetal diagnosis is to prevent the birth of certain children. Although government welfare systems have disdained facilitating childbearing by poor women of color by declining to fund fertility treatments, they may treat prenatal genetic testing quite differently. The very same thinking that promotes laws and policies that pressure these women to have fewer children could promote laws and policies that pressure them to have genetically screen children.
Dorothy Roberts, Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-Create Race in the Twenty-First Century
This is a very good book, don’t get me wrong, but as someone not particularly used to science writing, I’ve found it a little less engaging and readable than Roberts’ other works. Then I got to this section and ran smack dab into the kind of tour de force that long ago forced me to commit to reading everything she writes. More quotes coming.
From the article entitled, “Mom Faces More Jail Time Than the Drunk Driver Who Killed Her Son — WHY?”
The driver, Jerry Guy, “fled the scene after the accident but later admitted being involved, according to CNN affiliate WXIA-TV. He was sentenced to five years in prison but served only six months. He is serving the remainder of the sentence on probation,” CNN noted in July of 2011. Nelson’s son A.J. died in April 2010. This woman has been on trial for three years while grieving for the death of her son in what was an accident caused by a drunk driver. If Nelson were to be ticketed at all, to be made an example of (because she’s a black single mother and American society loves to make an example of black single mothers), the only charge that seems reasonable in this case is “crossing roadway elsewhere than a crosswalk.” There’s no doubt that pedestrians need to obey rules and watch out for their own safety, but as Nelson’s attorney, David Savoy, suggested, “the white stripes of a crosswalk are not impenetrable walls of steel that could have prevented a driver from striking someone crossing the street.”
Stereotypes about black female criminality and irresponsibility legitimate the massive disruption that both systems inflict on black families and communities. A popular mythology promoted over centuries portrays black women as unfit to bear and raise children. The sexually licentious Jezebel, the family-demolishing Matriarch, the devious Welfare Queen, the depraved pregnant crack addict accompanied by her equally monstrous crack baby—all paint a picture of a dangerous motherhood that must be regulated and punished. Unmarried black women represent the ultimate irresponsible mothers—women who raises their children without the supervision of a man. These stereotypes do not simply percolate in some disembodied white psyche. They are reinforced and recreated by foster care and prison, which leave the impression that black women are naturally prone to commit crimes and abuse their children. Stereotypes of maternal irresponsibility created and enforced by the child welfare system’s disproportionate supervision of black children help to sustain mass incarceration, and stereotypes of black female criminality help to sustain foster care. As Angela Davis observes, the prison–industrial complex “relies on racialized assumptions of criminality—such as images of black welfare mothers reproducing criminal children—and on racist practices in arrest, conviction, and sentencing patterns.” The joint production of stereotypes in the child welfare and prison systems helps to explain why juvenile justice authorities send black delinquents to juvenile detention while referring white delinquents to informal alternatives for the same offenses. Many officials think that all black children come from female-headed households that are ill equipped to handle a troubled child simply because their mothers are not married. Because they perceive black single mothers as incapable of providing adequate supervision of their children, officials believe they are justified in placing these children under state control.

This is just a tiny snippet of the conclusion, but if you have a chance to read the whole thing please do. The full text pdf is at the source.
If a black woman and a white woman both need emergency obstetric care, a Brazilian doctor will assist the white woman because of the stereotype that black women are better at handling pain and are used to giving birth.

Suspected Racists Refuse to Help Black Female While Her Offspring Drown During Hurricane
Two little boys who were literally swept out of the arms of their mother during the hurricane have been found dead. But that’s not the whole story, and it gets even sadder: 39-year-old Glenda Moore, the mother of the two boys (pictured above with her husband, Damian), knocked on doors in her Staten Island neighborhood, begging for help during the hurricane. No one would assist her, her sister claims.
In this video, a black attempted mother, Keyana Moore, is interviewed regarding the news that the water in her residential area has been contaminated for more than two decades. So-called Missouri state officials reportedly knew for at least 18 years.
Racist suspect and interviewer states it’s still unclear why the presence of this carcinogen in the water, called Tetrachlorobenzene (TCB), was not made public knowledge. Short answer: Racism (White Supremacy).
African-American women are nearly four times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than white women. These rates and disparities have not improved in more than 20 years.
A 35-year old white mother prostitutes her children, ages 14 and 7, to several white men.
The culture of Racism (White Supremacy) is one that rapes the minds and bodies of all children. One should not be surprised that a so-called parent is explicitly involved in this monstrous process.
